Explore the spiritual capital of India — from the ancient Kashi Vishwanath Temple to the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Banaras, is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world and the spiritual capital of India. A yatra to this ancient city is considered one of the most profound spiritual experiences a Hindu can undertake. Situated on the western bank of the sacred Ganga, Varanasi is believed to be the city of Lord Shiva himself, where the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth is transcended. Mark Twain famously wrote that Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend. The heart of the Kashi Yatra is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which was magnificently expanded with the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor inaugurated in recent years. The temple complex now seamlessly connects the ancient shrine to the ghats of the Ganga. A boat ride at dawn along the 84 ghats reveals the full spectrum of life in Varanasi: priests performing morning rituals, wrestlers exercising at akharas, washermen at work, and cremation pyres burning perpetually at Manikarnika Ghat, the most sacred cremation ground in Hinduism. Sarnath, located just 10 kilometers from Varanasi, adds a Buddhist dimension to the yatra. It was here that Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting the wheel of dharma in motion. The Dhamek Stupa and the archaeological museum house treasures spanning over two millennia. The juxtaposition of Hindu and Buddhist sacred geography makes the Kashi Yatra uniquely multi-layered. The city is also a living museum of Indian classical music, silk weaving, and culinary traditions. Evenings in Varanasi are defined by the magnificent Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where priests perform elaborate fire rituals with synchronized precision. The yatra is best undertaken between October and March when the weather is pleasant. Summers are scorching and the monsoon, while atmospheric, makes navigation difficult.
The recommended season for this yatra is Oct-Mar. Plan accordingly for the best weather and darshan experience.
