The sacred circuit of four Himalayan shrines in Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — believed to grant moksha.
The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in Hinduism, taking devotees through the four sacred shrines nestled in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. This spiritual odyssey encompasses Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna river; Gangotri, the origin of the holy Ganga; Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva; and Badrinath, the abode of Lord Vishnu. Together, these four dhams form a circuit that Hindus believe washes away all sins and grants moksha, liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The journey traditionally begins from Haridwar, the gateway to the gods, and proceeds westward to Yamunotri before looping through Gangotri, Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath. Each shrine sits at elevations ranging from 3,000 to nearly 3,600 meters above sea level, demanding physical endurance but rewarding pilgrims with breathtaking Himalayan vistas, pristine rivers, and an overwhelming sense of divine presence. The trek to Kedarnath, roughly 16 kilometers uphill from Gaurikund, is the most physically demanding segment and often considered the spiritual climax of the yatra. Modern infrastructure has made the pilgrimage more accessible than ever. Helicopter services now connect Kedarnath and Badrinath, while well-maintained roads link the major towns. Government-run rest houses, private lodges, and ashrams provide accommodation along the route. Despite these comforts, the yatra retains its raw spiritual intensity. Pilgrims still bathe in the icy thermal springs at Yamunotri, perform puja at the confluence of rivers near Gangotri, and brave the elements to receive darshan at Kedarnath and Badrinath. The best time to undertake the Char Dham Yatra is during the summer months of May and June, and again in September and October after the monsoon recedes. The shrines remain closed during winter due to heavy snowfall. Pilgrims are advised to carry warm clothing, rain gear, and basic medicines for altitude sickness. Registration with the Uttarakhand government is mandatory and can be completed online. The yatra is not merely a journey across geography; it is a transformative inner pilgrimage that has drawn seekers for centuries.
The recommended season for this yatra is May-June, Sep-Oct. Plan accordingly for the best weather and darshan experience.
