The Shri Kedarnath Temple Committee, in coordination with the Uttarakhand state government, has officially declared May 7, 2026 as the opening date for the sacred Kedarnath Yatra. The announcement was made following the traditional ritual of drawing lots at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath on March 10, 2026.
This year's yatra season is expected to see over 15 lakh pilgrims, building on the record numbers from last year. The state government has invested Rs 350 crore in infrastructure improvements along the 16-kilometer trek route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. New rest stops, improved pathways, and additional medical facilities have been installed at multiple points along the route.
Helicopter services from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi will resume operations from May 5, two days before the official opening. DGCA has approved three new helipad locations to reduce congestion at the existing landing zones. Online booking for helicopter rides opens on April 1 through the official Char Dham Yatra portal.
The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee has also introduced a new digital registration system that allows pilgrims to book darshan slots in advance. The biometric registration that was made mandatory last year will continue, with additional centers set up in Haridwar and Rishikesh for early registration.
