Ugadi: South Indian New Year

Ugadi (or Yugadi) derives from "Yuga Adi" meaning the beginning of a new age. It falls on the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra month (March-April) and marks the start of the Hindu lunisolar calendar. This is one of the few festivals that directly acknowledges the mixed nature of life by ritually tasting a preparation that combines all six flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent.
