The Legend

According to the Padma Purana, Vrinda was a devout woman married to the demon Jalandhara. Her chastity made Jalandhara invincible. When Vishnu used trickery to defeat Jalandhara by breaking Vrinda's pativrata dharma, the heartbroken Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become a stone (Shaligram). She then self-immolated, and from her ashes grew the Tulsi plant. Vishnu, repentant, blessed Tulsi as his most beloved and promised to marry her annually.

Wedding Rituals

The Tulsi plant is decorated like a bride with a sari, ornaments, mehendi, and a face made of a picture or doll. The Shaligram stone or Vishnu idol serves as the groom. A mandap (wedding canopy) is created using sugarcane sticks and mango leaves around the Tulsi plant. Full wedding ceremonies are performed: kanya daan, mangal pheras (circumambulations), and tying of the mangalsutra. A Brahmin priest chants wedding mantras.

Timing and Significance

Tulsi Vivah falls on Prabodhini Ekadashi (11th day of Kartik bright fortnight), the day Vishnu wakes from his four-month cosmic sleep (Yoga Nidra). This day marks the end of Chaturmas, the monsoon period of spiritual retreat. From this day, weddings, griha pravesh (housewarming), and other auspicious activities resume. It is considered extremely auspicious to perform or witness a Tulsi Vivah.

Cultural Practices

In Maharashtra, Tulsi Vivah is especially popular and marks the start of the wedding season. Families who have lost a member during the year often sponsor community Tulsi Vivah as a way of performing a sacred act. The ceremony is followed by community meals and distribution of prasad including sugarcane, gooseberries, and tulsi leaves. Some communities combine it with Dev Uthani Ekadashi celebrations.
