Pongal and Makar Sankranti — Indian Harvest Festivals Explained

When the sun begins its northward journey in mid-January, India erupts in harvest celebrations that go by different names in every region but share the same spirit of gratitude and joy. Makar Sankranti is one of the few Hindu festivals determined by the solar calendar rather than the lunar calendar, so it falls on approximately the same date each year. Makar Sankranti Across North India

In North India, Makar Sankranti is marked by taking holy dips in rivers, especially at the Ganges in Varanasi and the Sangam at Prayagraj.
