Fasting and Food During Navratri

Fasting during Navratri is a widespread practice believed to purify the body and focus the mind on devotion. The Navratri vrat (fast) restricts grains, legumes, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Permitted foods include fruits, milk, buckwheat flour (kuttu), water chestnut flour (singhara), sabudana (tapioca), potatoes, and rock salt. Many devotees observe complete fasts on the first and last days while following a partial sattvic diet on other days. The fasting regimen varies by region and family tradition.
