Nahay Khay (Day 1)
Take a holy bath in a river and cook a sattvic meal of rice, dal, and pumpkin in a new earthen vessel. Eat only one meal throughout the day.
Kharna (Day 2)
Observe a full-day fast and break it after sunset by offering kheer (rice pudding) and roti to the sun. This begins the 36-hour nirjala fast.
Sandhya Arghya (Day 3)
Stand waist-deep in a river or water body and offer arghya — water, milk, and fruits — to the setting sun using a bamboo basket (soop).
Usha Arghya (Day 4)
Before dawn, return to the water body and offer the final arghya to the rising sun. Break the 36-hour fast with the blessed prasad.
Bamboo Baskets (Soop)
Large flat bamboo baskets used to hold and offer fruits, thekua, and other prasad to the Sun God.
Thekua
Traditional wheat and jaggery cookies made with ghee, specially prepared as the main prasad for Chhath Puja.
Sugarcane
Whole sugarcane sticks are an essential part of the Chhath offering, symbolizing strength and sweetness.
New Earthen Vessels
All cooking during Chhath must be done in new, clean earthen or brass vessels to maintain ritual purity.
First day of Diwali. Lord Dhanvantari worship; buying gold, silver, and utensils is auspicious.
