Significance
Return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya; Goddess Lakshmi worship for wealth
Dhanteras (Day 1)
Purchase gold, silver, or new utensils. Light diyas at the entrance of the home. Worship Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi for health and wealth.
Naraka Chaturdashi (Day 2)
Wake before dawn for an oil bath (abhyanga snan). Light diyas to ward off evil. Prepare sweets and savories for the coming celebrations.
Lakshmi Puja (Day 3 - Main Diwali)
Clean and decorate the home with rangoli and diyas. Perform Lakshmi-Ganesh puja at the auspicious evening muhurat. Light diyas in every corner of the home.
Govardhan Puja (Day 4)
Prepare a mountain of food (Annakut) as an offering to Lord Krishna. In North India, cow dung hillocks representing Govardhan are decorated and worshipped.
Bhai Dooj (Day 5)
Sisters apply tilak on brothers' foreheads, perform aarti, and pray for their well-being. Brothers give gifts to sisters in return.

New Clothes
