Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, perched atop the seven hills of Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh, is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. With over 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims visiting daily, it is the most visited religious site in the world. The temple's history dates back over 1,200 years, and the presiding deity is also known as Balaji, Govinda, and Srinivasa.
To visit Tirupati, you must first plan your darshan. The TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam) trust offers several types of darshan — Sarva Darshan (free, but long queues of 10-20 hours), Special Entry Darshan (Rs 300 ticket with shorter wait of 2-4 hours), and VIP Break Darshan for donors and dignitaries. Booking the Rs 300 ticket online through the TTD website at least 2-3 days in advance is strongly recommended. Slots fill up quickly, especially during festivals and weekends.
Getting to Tirumala requires traveling to the base town of Tirupati first. The nearest airport is Tirupati Airport (15 km), well connected to major cities. Tirupati Railway Station receives trains from Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Delhi. From the base, you can take the free TTD bus service or walk the sacred footpath through Alipiri or Srivari Mettu. The walk takes about 3-4 hours and is considered a spiritual experience in itself.
Important rules to remember: dress modestly (no shorts, sleeveless tops), mobile phones are allowed but must be on silent, photography is prohibited inside the sanctum, and the famous Tirupati laddu prasadam can be booked online or purchased at designated counters. The best time to visit is between September and February when the weather is pleasant. Early mornings (before 6 AM) typically have the shortest wait times for Sarva Darshan.
