The Uttar Pradesh government and Prayagraj Mela Authority have ramped up preparations for the upcoming Maha Kumbh 2026, with authorities projecting an unprecedented 40 crore pilgrims over the 55-day festival period. This would make it the largest peaceful gathering in human history, surpassing the 2019 Kumbh which drew approximately 24 crore visitors.
Infrastructure development worth Rs 7,000 crore is underway at the Sangam area where the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers converge. The preparations include construction of 25 pontoon bridges, 1.5 lakh temporary toilets, 50,000 LED streetlights across the mela area, and a temporary city spread over 4,000 hectares — larger than many Indian cities.
The UP government has signed agreements with tech companies to deploy AI-powered crowd management systems, facial recognition for missing persons identification, and a real-time crowd density monitoring network using 5,000 CCTV cameras and satellite imagery. A dedicated Kumbh app will provide navigation, emergency services, and crowd-sourced information in 15 languages.
Healthcare infrastructure includes 20 temporary hospitals with 2,000 beds, 500 ambulances, and air ambulance services. The Indian Army will assist with pontoon bridge construction and emergency response. International media centers with simultaneous translation facilities are being set up to accommodate over 5,000 journalists from around the world.
