In a significant development for the annual Rath Yatra, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has announced a modified processional route for the 2026 festival. The change incorporates the newly completed Grand Road widening project, which has expanded the historic Bada Danda from 60 feet to 100 feet in width.
The new route will allow the three magnificent chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra to proceed more smoothly from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. The widened road eliminates several bottleneck points that previously caused delays and crowd management challenges during the nine-day festival.
Odisha Chief Minister announced that the state government has allocated Rs 180 crore specifically for Rath Yatra 2026 preparations. This includes installation of 500 CCTV cameras along the route, construction of 20 temporary medical camps, and deployment of over 10,000 police personnel. A dedicated command center will monitor the procession in real-time using drone surveillance.
The Rath Yatra is tentatively scheduled for late June 2026, with exact dates to be confirmed based on the Hindu calendar. International tourists will be able to watch the festival from newly constructed viewing galleries along the route, a first for the historic event.
