When the search party discovers that Sita is held captive in Lanka across the vast ocean, only Hanuman possesses the power to make the leap. He grows to an enormous size and flies across the sea, overcoming obstacles sent by the ocean. In Lanka, he finds Sita in the Ashoka garden, delivers Rama's ring as a token of hope, and assures her of rescue. Before leaving, Hanuman allows himself to be captured, and when Ravana orders his tail set ablaze, Hanuman uses the fire to burn down much of Lanka before leaping back to Rama with news of Sita.
