Hanuman was born to Anjana, an apsara (celestial being) who had taken birth as a monkey due to a curse, and Kesari, a vanara chief. The wind god Vayu played a key role in his birth, which is why Hanuman is also called Pawanputra (son of the wind) and Vayu Putra. As a child, Hanuman mistook the sun for a ripe fruit and leapt toward it. Indra struck him with his vajra (thunderbolt), injuring his chin (hanu), giving him the name Hanuman. When Vayu withdrew air from the universe in anger, the gods blessed the child with multiple powers: Brahma granted freedom from death, Indra ensured the vajra would never harm him again, Surya became his teacher, and Agni made him immune to fire.

Hanuman in the Ramayana: Key Stories

Hanuman's role in the Ramayana defines his character forever. He first meets Lord Rama and Lakshmana in the forest of Kishkindha, disguised as a brahmin. Recognizing Rama as his lord, he devotes his life to Rama's service. The greatest display of his devotion comes when he leaps across the ocean to Lanka to find Sita, the Sundarkand chapter being the most celebrated portion of the epic. In Lanka, he finds Sita in the Ashoka Vatika, delivers Rama's ring as proof, and burns Lanka with his flaming tail. Later, when Lakshmana is mortally wounded in battle, Hanuman flies to the Himalayas and lifts the entire Dronagiri mountain because he cannot identify the Sanjeevani herb in time.

The Chalisa describes Hanuman's qualities, powers, and adventures, while seeking his protection and blessings. Devotees believe reciting it regularly dispels fear, removes evil influences, and grants strength and courage. Tuesday and Saturday Worship Traditions

Tuesday and Saturday are the two days most sacred to Hanuman devotees. On Tuesdays, devotees visit Hanuman temples, offer sindoor (vermillion), jasmine oil, and laddoos made from besan (gram flour) or boondi. Lighting a ghee or mustard oil lamp is essential. Saturdays are also significant as Hanuman is believed to have the power to reduce the malefic effects of Shani (Saturn). People suffering from Shani dasha or Sade Sati particularly worship Hanuman on Saturdays. The practice of applying sindoor on Hanuman idols comes from a story where Hanuman saw Sita applying sindoor for Rama's long life, so he covered his entire body in it.
