Hindu philosophy is remarkably diverse, encompassing six major schools of thought called the Shad Darshanas. Nyaya and Vaisheshika: Logic and Atoms

Nyaya, founded by sage Gautama, is the school of logic and epistemology. It provides systematic methods for valid reasoning and debate, identifying four sources of knowledge: perception, inference, comparison, and testimony. Vaisheshika, founded by sage Kanada, is a complementary school that analyzes physical reality into atomic categories. It proposed that all matter is composed of indivisible atoms centuries before modern atomic theory. These two schools are often studied together as they share a logical approach to understanding the universe.

Samkhya and Yoga: Theory and Practice

Samkhya, attributed to sage Kapila, is one of the oldest philosophical systems. It identifies two fundamental realities: Purusha, pure consciousness, and Prakriti, the material world. Liberation comes from discriminating between the two. Yoga, systematized by sage Patanjali, is the practical application of Samkhya philosophy. Patanjali eight-limbed path provides step-by-step methods for stilling the mind and achieving direct experience of pure consciousness. Together, Samkhya provides the theory and Yoga provides the practice.

Purva Mimamsa: Ritual and Duty

Purva Mimamsa, founded by sage Jaimini, focuses on the correct interpretation and performance of Vedic rituals. It argues that performing one prescribed duties according to the Vedas leads to spiritual merit and eventually liberation. This school developed sophisticated methods of textual interpretation that influenced Indian law and grammar. While seemingly focused on ritual, Mimamsa philosophy addresses deep questions about the nature of duty, language, and the relationship between action and its results.

Vedanta: The Crown of Philosophy

Vedanta, meaning the end or culmination of the Vedas, is the most influential school of Hindu philosophy today. It focuses on the Upanishads, Brahma Sutras, and Bhagavad Gita. Within Vedanta there are sub-schools: Advaita Vedanta of Shankaracharya teaches non-dualism, that Brahman and the individual self are one. Vishishtadvaita of Ramanujacharya teaches qualified non-dualism. Dvaita of Madhvacharya teaches dualism. Each offers a different understanding of the relationship between God, the soul, and the world.
