Janmashtami celebrates the divine descent of Lord Krishna, whose teachings in the Bhagavad Gita remain humanity's greatest guide to righteous living and spiritual wisdom.

Devotees observe a complete fast from sunrise until midnight, the time of Krishna's birth. Some observe nirjala (without water) while others consume fruits and milk.

Midnight Celebration
At midnight, the exact moment of Krishna's birth, conch shells are blown, bells ring, and aarti is performed. An idol of baby Krishna is bathed and placed in a decorated cradle.
Dahi Handi
In Maharashtra, young men form human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot of curd hung high on a rope, reenacting Krishna's butter-stealing playfulness.

Devotional songs glorifying Krishna's life and teachings are sung throughout the night, with community kirtan sessions continuing until dawn.
